Walking the Path of Enlightenment Life After Life
Rising and sinking, in the boundless sea of life
We drift along with wind and wave
Our minds, so easily swayed,
From whence it came and where it is headed,
We cannot tell
I vow to become awakened,
To search the ocean of universal truth
Liberated from the binds of karma,
I vow to return to this world
In coming and going, always unfettered and free
I take the vow of the Earth Treasury Bodhisattva
To free all sentient beings from suffering
I give rise to the aspirations of Kuan Yin Bodhisattva,
That universal love spreads without boundaries p>
May I realize my aspirations and vows,

Perfect and Radiant Buddha Nature
In the dark night, stars glitter
The Milky Way is brightly lit
As the four seasons, the days and nights revolve and change,
Dharma-nature remains and pervades the universe
Living beings are many and varied,
In similar ways they live, breathe and rest
Conditions arise and cease,
Everything is impermanent
Evil causes, conditions and retributions
Must be clearly discerned no matter how subtle
The Law of Karma never fails
For the karma created, we must repent
When there is no wind,
No wave arises
In the absolute stillness of the dharma realm,
Perfect and radiant Buddha nature pervades
When there is no wind,

In the absolute stillness of the dharma realm,

Overture to 'Dharma as Water'
The Origins of the Water Repentance Text
The universe is vast and boundless
Arising and ceasing, nothing is constant
Endlessly in the Six Realms we take rebirth;
Powerless, we have no control
How does karma originate?
Where does consciousness go?
Ignorance is a blinding darkness
Cause and effect is interdependent
The good and evil we have done,
Like a shadow, they stealthily follow
Who is without transgression?
Who is without faults?
The root of our wisdom often lies buried,
And often, we experience suffering
So let us speak now of the origins
Of the Compassionate Water Repentance Text
When Wu Da was young, he travelled and studied
Before attaining fame, he met an ailing monk
Smelly, sickly, and filthy,
The monk was shunned by everyone
Wu Da could not bear to see him suffer,
He cared for him and gave him medicine
Then, grateful for all the gallantry shown,
The monk offered to help him in times of need< /p>
Diligently, Wu Da continued to practice,
His virtues and discipline became well-known
The Emperor appointed him Imperial Dharma Master,
Respectfully attending his lectures on Dharma
He gave Wu Da a Dharma-throne of agarwood
Then in Wu Da, a great arrogance arose
His karmic retribution, thus unlocked,
A human-faced boil appeared
As his knee knocked against the throne
The sore had eyebrows, eyes, a mouth and teeth
Just like a person, it could eat and drink
The doctors knew not what to do
It was then the ill monk's offer came to mind
Using twin pine trees as a landmark,
Wu Da sought in earnest, the monk in the mountains
He told of the sore and his suffering,
The monk promised him, by washing it would heal
As Wu Da bent to fetch water from the spring,
The human-faced sore yelled out its grievance
Yuan Ang had Chao Cuo executed;
From Han to Tang Dynasty, that was ten lifetimes past
In the East City, his body was hewn in half; from that great hatred arose
Unable to exact revenge, over many lifetimes, he greatly suffered
The Venerable One compassionately unravelled the karmic fetters,
Cleansing all enmity with the Samadhi Dharma-water
Wu Da suddenly awakened, as if from a dream
Retiring to a hut, the Repentance Text he wrote
The Buddhas have compassion for all sentient beings,
Thus the Dharma of the Water Repentance is taught
Foolish are the mere mortals,
Their defilements are many
Countless also are their wrongs,
Rich or poor though they be

Expounding the Repentance Teachings
A great vow was made by Master Wu Da
To expound the Water Repentance teachings
The practice of compassion dignifies our cultivation
And the teachings of Repentance reign supreme
The Samadhi Dharma-water cleanses,
Purifying the sins of all beings
With hearts set on renouncing evil and doing good,
Flames of fire can transmute into a red lotus
A great vow was made by Master Wu Da
To expound the Water Repentance teachings
The practice of compassion dignifies our cultivation
And the teachings of Repentance reign supreme
The Samadhi Dharma-water cleanses,
Purifying the sins of all beings
It rectifies disorder and confusion,
And delivers the world from suffering
The sea of suffering is vast and boundless,
By turning back, we can return to the shore
Eliminate the Three Obstacles and all delusions
Listen to the calling of the Buddhas!

Repenting the Obstacle of Afflictions
The Mind is the Source of Afflictions
The mind is like a refined artist
It can paint a riot of colors
All conditions are created by the mind
The state of mind changes as thoughts arise
A single thought can manifest Ten Dharma Realms
Ten Dharma Realms can arise out of one thought
Good thoughts create good conditions
Evil thoughts lead to endless evils
Good and evil are empty by nature but their causes prevail
Just a single thought can create good or evil
In our countless rebirths in this world,
Countless transgressions we did commit
Wise or foolish, we have afflictions
Rich or poor, we receive retribution
We commit wrongs with body, speech and mind
Through the six doors of the senses, we err
Due to delusion, we entertain deviant thoughts
External influences further defile us
Lifetime after lifetime, we commit the Ten Evils
Myriads of conditions multiply and trouble us
Though we commit countless transgressions
The sources of our sufferings are these three:
The first, affliction; second, karma,
Third, the retribution of reincarnation
In pursuit of the Noble Path, all three are obstacles
They are hinderances both in human or heavenly realms
Buddha viewed these as the Three Obstacles
If they are not eliminated, suffering remains
The remedy for the Three Obstacles is as follows
Acknowledging our wrongs, we regret and repent
The teachings of repentance are like pure water
They cleanse away the sins of all beings
Today with utmost sincerity, we repent
With the compassionate Samadhi-water,
All evils and defilements we wash away,
Openly we repent our previous wrongs

Repenting the Obstacle of Afflictions
The Bottomless Pit of Desire
Life is like a play on stage,
The title reads, “Greed and Desire”
Greed is like the eternal depths of the sea,
Out of endless desires, misery is born
A man works hard just to make a living
Once his belly is full, he ponders what to wear
Then clad in fine and fancy clothes,
His house now seems too humble
When tall buildings and grand homes are his,
He starts bemoaning the lack of a pretty wife
When a beautiful bride he marries,
He worries about having no horse to ride
Having bought a fine steed and golden saddle,
He grumbles about having few servants
Once he has scores of servants,
He then seeks power over others
Maneuvering himself into government one day,
His lowly status he then despises
Even if he becomes a high-ranking official,
Fervently he dreams of ascending the throne
Once he becomes Emperor,
He yearns to play chess with the Gods
When the Gods assent to a game of chess,
He desires to build a ladder to the heavens
Before the coming of Death,
He knows not what is contentment
Even if he becomes Emperor of Heaven,
He whines that the palace is not opulent
When greed and desire know no bounds,
The creation of evil karma never ceases
Afflictions accompany our evil karma
Cause and condition, fruition and retribution
All are interdependent
Knowing our wrongs,
We repent and feel remorse
The Law of Karma never fails
We will surely reap what we sow

Repenting the Obstacle of Afflictions
One by One, I Repent My Wrongs
Aeons of cummulative afflictions all arise from our thoughts
For each and every one, I now repent
I repent my impure attachments and desires,
My greed for fame, wealth and power
I repent my anger, rage and maliciousness,
Which often cause hurt to others
I repent my ignorance, foolishness, and delusion,
My blind oblivion to the Law of Cause and Effect
I repent my pride, conceit and arrogance
And how I had looked down on others p>
I repent doubting the sages and the true path,
Wavering belief breeds muddled confusion
I repent clinging to the ego, the illusory “self,”
And my delusions towards “permanence” in life
I repent being drawn to deviant behaviours and evil friends,
Indulging in erroneous ways and self-cherishing thoughts
I repent coveting wealth and possessing a miserly heart
By not forming good affinities with others, regrets are all in vain
I repent being domineering, unreasonable, and forgetting to be gentle,
My quickness to anger, demanding ways and resentfulness
I repent my burning jealousy, the lack of tolerance for others,
Like facing flying sands against the wind, I hurt myself
I repent distancing myself from the Noble Truths,
Drifting along the sea of rebirth and death
I repent my ignorance and delusions since beginningless time,
In the Six Realms, I experience the sufferings of cyclic rebirth

Repenting the Obstacle of Afflictions
Correct Past Wrongs and Cultivate for the Future
Deciding to reform and cultivate for the future,
Today I repent and vow thus:
I vow to drain the tide of greed and desire,
Sow seeds of goodness and eliminate miserliness
I vow to douse the fires of anger and impatience,
And nourish the world with loving kindness p>
I vow to destroy ignorance and delusions,
Listen to Dharma and engage in acts of kindness
I vow to break my pride and arrogance,
Uphold precepts, practice forbearance and humility
I vow to root out my doubt and disbelief in Dharma,
To have faith in the Law of Cause and Effect
I vow to abandon wrong views,
Cultivate loving-kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity
I vow to eliminate narrow-mindedness and jealousy,
To emulate the good qualities of sages and sow good seeds
I vow to comprehend the impermanence of life,
Without delay, determinedly cultivating with diligence< /p>
I vow to cultivate the Thirty-Seven Practices to Enlightenment,
To purify my mind and practice mindfulness
I vow to develop compassion and Bodhicitta,
And perfect my compassion and wisdom to help all beings< /p>

Repenting the Obstacle of Karma
Retributions vary according to karma
Like a shadow, our karma follows us wherever we go
Mortals lack understanding of the Law of Karma
They observe kind people often suffering abuse
And the evil ones always having their way
Then they start to doubt the Law of Karma
The Sutras state that there are three types of retribution
Firstly, present life retribution; secondly, next life retribution
Then there is future life retribution; all will surely come to pass
Both good and evil karma will ripen, retribution will duly manifest

Repenting the Obstacle of Karma
The Three Evil Karmas of the Body
Killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct are the three evil bodily karmas
Amongst all unwholesome karmas, killing is the worst
To satisfy craving, the intent of killing may arise
For the love of flesh and blood, other beings we kill
For the sake of wealth, malicious intent may arise
We rob others of their assets and lives
Out of arrogance, the intent of killing may arise
We stomp on insects and harm many lives
Out of deviant beliefs, the intent of killing may arise
We slaughter animals, making sacrifice to spirits
For entertainment, the intent of killing may arise
Hounds and hawks, fowl and beasts we hunt
In attempting suicide, we harm our own bodies
We incite others to take human lives
Misusing rank and power, we commit atrocities
Wilfully, we attack with clubs and knives
Buddha taught us all sentient beings are equal
Do not unto others what you would not have them do unto you
All beings that are born exist for a reason
Together, we live as one family in the Saha-world
Heaven values the life of all beings
Why then, must we senselessly kill?
The second evil karma of the body is stealing
Beware the heavy karma that stealing creates
Do not hanker after what is not yours
Seek not the ill-gotten gains
Cheating, even nickel-and-dime, causes us trouble
Passing off second-rate for first-rate is dishonorable
We scheme and plot to short-change others
Deceiving both young and old for minor gains
We break into homes for valuables to steal
At high interest, we make loans to others
We move our fence, encroaching the lands of another
Using trickery, we swindle the gullible and the naive
We seize public resources for private gains,
Kidnap children and seduce women
We abuse power and embezzle public funds,
Solicit bribes and extort money
We rob others with guns and knives
Simple villagefolk are cruelly victimized
We engage in organized crime, defrauding others
The innocent victims are left in tears
It matters not if the theft is big or small,
The karma thus created is hard to eliminate
The third evil karma of the body is sexual misconduct,
There is no difference in severity for this karma
Once we lust we get entangled and sink
From the sea of desire, turbulent waves arise
Buddha said sensual love and desire are like a prison
Our bodies and minds suffer greatly with no escape
How can one distinguish between man and beast?
A sense of shame and decorum differentiates the two
Some threaten others and steal their wives,
Break apart marriages and destroy families
They covet beauty and harass the innocent,
Of all, corruption of another's chastity is most despicable
Some lose themselves in pursuing the sensual,
Spending their days in pleasure seeking, whilst their families weep
We must awaken to the Law of Cause and Effect
From sexual misconduct, the karma that arises is hard to eliminate
Advise others to remain pure in body,
Let integrity guard our actions
A wife must uphold the virtue of chastity,
A husband must ensure his faithfulness
If we guard our bodies and minds well,
Every family will be peaceful, happy, and blessed

Repenting the Obstacle of Karma
The Four Evil Karmas of Speech
The four evil karmas of speech are like sharp blades
Each cut draws blood and harms others
The first evil karma of speech is abusive language
Harsh and mean words are most unbearable
Every derisive word can hurt one like a needle
We blame heaven and earth and curse the spirits,
Berate sages and falsely accuse the kind souls
Indeed we have no sense of propriety
Scolding and demeaning others, we hurt their feelings
Intimidating and threatening, we wound many others
The second evil karma of speech is lying
We speak words that lack truth and sincerity
Deceiving ourselves along with others,
We concoct tall tales and treat them lightly
Deceitfully we lie about accomplishments
And pretend to know things we do not
Lies have always been most troubling
Abandoning deceit for truth is truly benefic
The third evil karma of speech is flattery
It is agreeable and pleasing to the ear
Just like opium coated in sugar,
We find it delightful though it is poisonous
Exaggerations may be conveyed via pen on paper
Fawning words may be whispered in our ear
Evil may be disguised in a song of praise
The ear and eye thus deceived, disasters will never cease
The fourth evil karma of speech is gossip
Gossip can lead to all kinds of wrongdoings
We praise others to their faces,
Then defame them behind their backs
By telling tales and sowing discord,
We drive a wedge between close kins
Gossip gives rise to many conflicts
A society in turmoil is most ominous

Repenting the Obstacle of Karma
One by One, I Repent
Today, I repent for each and every transgression
To free myself from the bonds of karma, never to sink again
I repent using knives, sticks, guns and rocks to kill
On my cruel rampage, living beings met with harm
I repent killing other creatures indiscriminately, accidentally or for sport,
With utter disregard, I cared not that all beings are born equal
I repent my greed and weakness for wealth,
How I had felt no shame and no remorse
I repent being deeply entrenched in sensual love and desire
In the all-consuming sea of lust, wildly I am tossed about
I repent telling lies for my own benefit
Like a snake spitting poison, my words hurt others
I repent speaking insincere words of flattery
And causing discord through gossip and tale-bearing
I repent often being captivated by appearances
And giving rise to greed when I see beautiful sights
I repent letting my ears be bewitched by pleasant sounds;
By sweet words, my judgment is clouded p>
I repent that my nose is often seduced by sweet fragrances
Smelling pleasant scents gives rise to improper thoughts
I repent that my tongue is often tempted by taste,
Eating living creatures from land and sea to satisfy my palate
I repent that my body is often attracted to touch,
The feel of soft and silky skin is hard to resist
I repent that my mind is often deluded by thoughts

Repenting the Obstacle of Karma
Make Vows< strong>with Utmost Sincerity
Lost in the mundane world, we lose sight of our true nature
When the Three Minds are obscured, afflictions arise
Though Buddha-nature in every person is inherent
Foolishly, from karma of body, speech and mind, ignorance arises
Today, I sincerely and reverently vow
I will not create negative karma of body and speech
I vow to no longer resent, hate, or kill
I will save and protect living beings at all costs
I vow to uphold in every lifetime, the vegetarian precept
That I may never hear mournful cries of the slaughtered
I vow to lessen my desires, be content and never rob
I will not entertain jealousy or avarice, neither will I usurp
I vow to be generous and charitable, never being stingy and greedy
Giving when it is difficult helps me in my spiritual practice
I vow to uphold forever, the pure precepts;
I will not be seduced by the sensual, nor dwell on lust
I vow to realize that my cravings are like shackles that restrain
Willingly, I renounce the Five Cravings and free myself
I vow never to speak ill of others, neither will I slander
To speak good words gently, like lotuses emerging from the mouth
I vow not to spread rumors and engage in lies,
To treat others sincerely and be honest with myself
I vow to refrain from gossiping and sowing the seeds of suspicion
Beneficial words that bring harmony, I will often speak
I vow not to flatter nor employ use of flowery words
I will speak and act with caution, and be humble
I vow to purify the six doors of the senses and realize wisdom
My mind will not be confused by external sense objects
I vow to eliminate the evil karma I have accumulated
And ensure such karma will not arise again in future

Experiencing the Six Realms in a Dream
In a wealthy and extravagant household,
Each family member had their own habituations
The husband respected the Three Jewels; he was vegetarian
The wife lived lavishly and was fond of flesh from living beings p>
Celebrating her birthday one day, the wife spared no expense
Pigs, goats, and other livestock made up the extravagant feast
Oblivious to the clamour of the animals' crying,
She was not afraid of retribution and did not cultivate blessings
Slumbering at nightfall, she dreamed her spirit left her body
Silently drifting, it made its way to the kitchen
It was there she saw pigs trussed up and bound
Terror struck as she felt her own throat pierced by a knife
The blood had yet to stop when the flesh was boiled in water
Chopping and slicing, numerous cuts were made all over
Slowly drifting, her spirit moved without stopping
Then hovering near, it attached itself to the body of an animal
Boiling water removed all hairs on flesh before it was fried in oil
The skin was flayed, the flesh was stripped; the pain was insufferable
No mercy was shown, the agony was unbearable
The servants were laughing, they were all unmoved
On the spot, live carp was butchered
It was scaled and skinned, then pounded into paste
Serving their mistress with fish balls, so freshly made,
The servants hoped to please and be rewarded< /p>
Awakening suddenly, she was seized with fear;
A bowl of fish ball soup was served by her maid
In her dreams, the anguish of sentient beings she keenly felt

Hell is not a fictional place

With suffering constantly appearing before our eyes,

The Realm of Animals
Lacking in awareness, knowledge, and judgement,
Ignorant sentient beings are all the same
Their bodies are imprisoned, they lack Right Views
Those in the Animal Realms are always lost
They wear a heavy yoke and eat swill
And pay for the enmity created in past lives
Foolish and ignorant, they live in the dark,
Helplessly, they endure slaughter and whipping

The Realm of the Asuras
Beings in the realm of the Asuras are deluded
They are stubborn, arrogant, and foolish
They get angry with scant regard for right and wrong,
And use flattery without differentiating good from evil p>
We realize the suffering of retribution only through fear
Awakening, we feel the urgency of vigilance
Brutality and mournful wailing is everywhere
In the human world, scenes like these are all around

Repenting the Obstacle of Karmic Retributions
Residual Retribution in Heaven and Human Realms
The Five Desires, so intensely burning, are difficult to satiate
We often miss those we love and meet the ones we hate
We feast on meat, copiously imbibing alcohol all night
Our bodies decay as endlessly, we indulge in our desires
Be on guard against residual karma coming to fruition
Body and mind, once gravely ill, are beyond cure
A human rebirth is rare, therefore commit not evil,
Lest we sink again and suffer from disasters

The Three Major and Three Minor Disasters
Fire, flood and storm,
Famine, epidemic and war
One after another, disasters occur
Man-made and natural, in cycles they recur

Streams of lava gush down and everyone flees;
Horror and destruction in just the blink of an eye

Repenting the Obstacle of Karmic Retributions
For Each and Every One I Repent
Hell is a dark and truly sorrowful place
We know not how long in evil realms we must remain
Today I repent all my transgressions
The Law of Cause and Effect never fails
I repent my wrongs in body, speech and mind,
They cause endless suffering and my descent into Hell
I repent doing evil and never practicing good,
These are the causes of rebirth in the Animal Realm
I repent killing, and my extravagance, miserliness and greed,
These are the causes of rebirth in the Hungry Ghost Realm
I repent for my arrogance and for following deviant paths,
Turning back from the realm of Asuras is difficult indeed
I repent my misuse of power and my high-handed bullying,
I was unprincipled, unscrupulous and morally indiscreet
I repent my harsh words, slander and gossip,
Out of nothing, tales and lies I did fabricate
I repent pursuing profit and self-gain
Constantly, evil notions arose, dispelling good thoughts< /p>
I repent casting nets to entrap and harm living beings,
From the clutches of retribution, I surely cannot escape
I repent my wolfish ways of being cruel and ruthless
Lacking entirely in kindness, love and respect
I repent flouting laws, being undisciplined and rebellious,
I was unfilial to my parents and wanting in morals
I repent my disrespect towards the Buddha and the Dharma,
And doubting that the Dharma can liberate all beings
I repent my afflictions, my negative karma, and the retribution due
I wholly dedicate all merits I create and accrue

Repenting the Obstacle of Karmic Retributions
Vowing with Utmost Sincerity
As the sun rises from the east to dispel the dark,
So the prodigal son finds his way home
One by one, I sincerely make these vows today,
May I be pure as crystal to transform the world
May all Hells transmute into Pure Lands
And all karmic obstacles be dispelled
May all evil affinities be transformed into good ones
And mountains of blades into fields of merit
May all beings have peace and happiness,
May they be at ease and never suffer calamities
May we not have thoughts of killing other beings
And help all beings co-exist in harmony
May we break with bad habits from many lifetimes,
And banish all obscurations and discursive thoughts
May we eliminate all epidemics and plagues,
Let there be no sickness, no pain and no tears p>
May all beings have food and clothing aplenty,
Let there be no lack and no suffering from cold or hunger
May all the world be free from war and violence
And society be filled with peace and harmony
May Buddha's teachings of the Great Vehicle spread,
That by evil doctrines, sentient beings cannot be misled
May we inspire the mind of awakening in one another,
May the Way of Innumerable Meanings be widely practiced

Finale
Closing Dedications
Time passes with nary a pause,
Worries come with bouts of wind and rain
Enmity and grudge often develop into disasters
From ignorance and delusion, waves of turmoil arise
In the Five Destinies, we suffer and drift about
The cycle of life and death is hard to transcend
Who can see through the tangled web of love and hate?
It was Buddha who taught us the Four Noble Truths
Dharma cleanses away our defilements like water can
Remember well the Three Studies and Six Perfections
All evil karma was created by our own actions
To engage in good or evil, the choice is ours p>
Boundless manifestations exist in our world
Impermanence is everywhere, it is ever visible
Pure Buddha nature pervades the four directions
Cause and effect is a cycle; no one escapes
Fame and wealth are but illusions
Who can hold them fast with both hands?
Happy times pass by so quickly
How do we hold on to even a single moment?
Ignorance and afflictions are the causes of karma
Once they enter our consciousness, it is hard to break free
Name and Form, the Six Sense-doors, Contact, Sensation,
Craving, Grasping, Becoming, Birth, Old Age and Death
Suffering arises from the accumulation of karma
Karma breeds afflictions and suffering results
To understand how Dharma purifies like water does
The Twelve Links of Cyclic Existence must be studied
Desire and expectations cause us suffering
Defiled attachment is life's greatest problem
Like clouds and smoke, eventually our pleasures dissipate
Let go of our glorious moments as they fade into nothing
When in Master Wu Da a single thought of arrogance arose
The human-faced sore sought to settle old scores
By the Samadhi-water Venerable Kanaka bestowed
Instantly, Master Wu Da's delusions were resolved< /p>
The obstacles of afflictions, karma, and retributions,
The practice of repentance explains them in detail
Ignorance, karma and defilements are completely washed away
And the Water Repentance practice is here to stay p>
(Repeat 3 Times)
In times of crisis, we must recognize clearly, right from wrong
In times of great calamities, we must bring forth great compassion
In times of great ignorance, we must exercise great wisdom
In times of great turmoil, we must deeply reflect and repent
The sea of suffering is vast and boundless,
By turning back, we can return to the shore
Eliminate the Three Obstacles and all delusions
Listen to the calling of the Buddhas!
