NorthAmerica – Hurricane Sandy Hit USA Hurricane Sandy pounded heavily on the east coast of the United States in late October 2012, leaving millions of people homeless. Tzu Chi swiftly distributed aid in the form of cash cards, blankets, hot meals and daily needs to the victims. Donation drives and prayer sessions were also organized by the Tzu Chi community from 33 countries. In recognition of the response and recovery efforts, the White House honoured Tzu Chi as Hurricane Sandy “Champion of Change” on April 24, 2013. Asia – Earthquake, China Within 48 hours after a magnitude 8 earthquake rocked Sichuan, China in May 2008, Tzu Chi volunteers began disaster relief operations by offering timely assistance and comfort to the victims. Tzu Chi also set up a relief service centre to provide hot meals and free medical services.
