Great Love 45 Green Efforts to Save the Earth In Malaysia, Tzu Chi started its environmental protection initiatives in 1995. The volunteers’ persistent efforts won recognition from the government as well as the local public. In 1990, Master Cheng Yen made a public appeal to protect the environment. As at December 2018, Tzu Chi had established a total of 10,406 recycling centres / points around the world. In Taiwan, earnings from recycling are used to fund a quarter of the operating cost in running Da Ai TV Station, which in turn produces TV programmes that have made positive influences to audiences around the world. Thus, the popular Tzu Chi saying: “Convert recyclables into gold, gold into love, and love into the stream of purity that goes around the world.” • In 2001, Tzu Chi was awarded the “Outstanding Award for Environment” and “The Most Environmental-friendly Organization” by the Sabah Environmental Action Committee; as well as the “Outstanding Award for Collection of Recyclable Paper” by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. • In 2003, Tzu Chi was awarded the “Award of Honour in Supporting National Conservation Project” by former Prime Minister Tun Dato’ Sri Haji Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi. • In 2004, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government awarded the “Caring Society Recycling Drive Award” to Tzu Chi. ARecycling Centre in Each Community Tzu Chi KL & Selangor aspires to set up a recycling centre in each local community in the hope that environmental protection gradually becomes a way of life. To-date, a total of 339 recycling centres / points had been set up in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Volunteers regularly approach companies, schools, public and private organizations to promote environmental conservation through talks and campaigns. Many local councils and resident associations have rendered their support by setting up community recycling centres to inculcate public awareness.
