GREAT LOVE

The Spirit of Bamboo Bank The first 30 founding members were housewives who saved NT$0.50 (about RM0.05) from their grocery money each day in a bamboo bank to help the poor. This is how the “spirit of Bamboo Bank” began. Even with as little as NT$0.50, precious lives can be saved. Doing charity is no longer the sole privilege of the rich. In fact, anyone can do it as long as one is willing to. This aspiration of human kindness has since thrived in Hualien, Taiwan and later spread to different parts of the world. Awards and Recognitions for Master Cheng Yen Master Cheng Yen has always reiterated that all the awards and recognitions bestowed on her are, in fact, the result of the overall excellent teamwork of the global Tzu Chi community. With selfless contribution in the society and the dedication in promoting Buddhism, Tzu Chi volunteers pledged to make the world a better place to live in. 1991 — 2015 • The Magsaysay Social Leadership Award from the Philippines Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation • Recommended for candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize • The Honorary Doctorate Degree in Social Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong • The Eisenhower International Peace Prize – the highest honour given by the PTPI • The International Human Rights Award from UNPO, the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization, the so-called “Little UN” • The Humanity Life Award from the US Noel Foundation • Honorary Model Hero Award by Philadelphia National Liberty Museum, America’s Home for Heroes as one of the world’s 27 most recognized contributors to human peace • The Honorary Doctorate Degree in Social Science from Hong Kong University • Outstanding Female in Buddhism Award from the World Buddhism University • The Honorary Social and Cultural Doctorate Degree from Jiaotong University • The 2004 Asian-American Heritage Award for Humanitarian Services from the Asian-American Federation of California (AAFC) • The first annual special “Lifetime Achievement Award in Volunteerism” from the Daily Volunteer Association (DVA) • The 2007 World Peace Prize from the American Los Angeles Chinese- American Elected Officials Organization (CEO) • The 24th Annual Niwano Peace Prize from the Japanese Niwano Peace Foundation • The WFB Merit Medal from World Fellowship of Buddhists • Role Model of the Year Award from Taiwan “Who’s Who” • International Charity Individual Award at the third International Charity Symposium • The Canada Vancouver city council declared October 21 as “Master Cheng Yen Day” • The 2011 FDR Distinguished Public Service Award from Roosevelt Institute • TIME has named Master Cheng Yen on its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world • The recognition of Friend of El Salvador • The DGPN Award, which carries the title “Datuk Seri”, from the state of Penang, Malaysia • The 2014 Rotary International Award of Honour • You Bring Charm to the World Award from Phoenix New Media • The 2015 BMF Personality of the Year Award from Better Malaysia Foundation • The Honorary Doctorate Degree in Social Development from Naresuan University (Not exclusive) Great Love 9
